Assistant Scoutmaster

Every Troop should have at least one assistant Scoutmaster. It has been found that many successful troop have three or more, allowing the Scoutmaster to divide responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS

If residing in this country but not a citizen of the United States, agrees to abide by the Scout Oath and Law, to respect and obey the laws of the United States of America, and to subscribe to the BSA statement of religious principle. Is at least 18 years of age, has good moral character, and is interested in working with boys.

At least one Assistant Scoutmaster should be able to replace the Scoutmaster's position in case of an emergency.

The Assistant Scoutmaster is recommended by the Scoutmaster, approved by the troop committee and chartered organization, and registered as an adult leader of the BSA.

RESPONSIBILITIES

An Assistant Scoutmaster's responsibilities (as designated by the Scoutmaster) are to

  • Help the Scoutmaster as needed. Be ready to fill in for the Scoutmaster, if necessary.
  • Complete Scoutmaster Fast Start Training and position-specific Basic Leader Training. Attend monthly roundtables.
  • Participate in troop meetings.
  • Supervise den chiefs and see that they are trained.
  • Help inform troop leaders of training opportunities and arrange for them to attend training sessions.
  • Work with the troop committee to develop and promote an ongoing plan for recruiting new boys.
  • Work with the Scoutmaster and troop committee on troop re-registration.
  • Help with troop activities, such as dinners, derbies, bike safety workshops, service projects, etc.
  • Work with the troop committee on outings to see that the troop and patrols qualify for the National Camping Award.
  • Participate in the annual troop program planning conference and troop leaders' meetings.
  • Promote the religious emblems program.
  • Support the policies of the BSA.
