DISTRICT HEALTH AND SAFETY CHAIRMAN

Basic Functions

The District Health and Safety Chairman, with the guidance of the District Vice Chairman program, recruits and leads a District Health & Safety Committee of sufficient size to ensure healthy and safe operations within the district, and serve as a member of the Council Health & Safety Committee.

Evaluation Criteria

1.           Keep district and unit leaders and youth members informed and alert to current BSA policies and procedures related to health and safety protections, accident prevention, emergency preparedness, health education, fitness and aquatics.

2.           Establish contacts with professional associations in the health and safety field who would make themselves available to the district as needs arise requiring their expertise; promote participation in courses conducted by outside groups (American Red Cross, American Heart Association, YMCA).

3.           Work closely with the District Training Chairman, Cub Scout Day Camp Chairman, Roundtable Chairmen, and Advancement Chairman to ensure the communication of health and safety policies, procedures and methods and to arrange the conducting of training in CPR, first aid, aquatics safety and related programs.

4.           Ensure that every unit has a designated and trained health and safety officer.

5.           Serve or arranges for another qualified person to serve as health and safety officer for all district activities and events.

6.           Conduct a district First Aid Contest.

7.           Stay alert and responsive to emerging health and safety practices and needs.

As with any leadership position, the leader is best judged by the results achieved by those people who are led.

A clear understanding of the roles and evaluation criteria for each of the other district leadership positions as provided in the manual is critical to the leader's success.
